The EEC and the International Road Transport Union are ready to strengthen cooperation
On October 24, 2016 a meeting between the Member of the Board – Minister in charge of Energy and Infrastructure Adamkul Zhunusov and Deputy Secretary General of the International Road Transport Union (IRU), Head of the Permanent Representation of the International Road Transport Union at the UN Igor Runov was held in Moscow.
The discussion of the meeting focused on the first global UN Global Sustainable Transport Conference scheduled to take place on November 26-27, 2016 in Ashgabat (Turkmenistan). The event will be attended by representatives of the Commission and the heads of the authorized public authorities of the Eurasian Economic Union. The meeting outlined the need to combine the efforts of the parties to create the maximum possible barrier-free environment in this industry.
The participants discussed the Resolution adopted by the UN General Assembly on December 19, 2014 ''Role of Transport and Transit Corridors in Providing International Cooperation for Sustainable Development'' and confirmed that the development of regional economic integration coupled with the formation of efficient regional transport organisations will contribute to growth in international trade, investment in infrastructure, and eliminate barriers.
Follow up the meeting, Adamkul Zhunusov and Igor Runov emphasised the importance of strengthening and enhancing cooperation between the EEC and the International Road Transport Union in the framework of the Memorandum previously signed by the parties. Particular attention should be given to the further development of land transport corridors and routes, strengthening the role of international organisations in the multilateral transport agenda, including sustainable transport development.
The International Road Transport Union (IRU) is an international organisation combining the interests of national motor transport unions and associations. It was founded in 1948. IRU members: 180 national unions and associations in the transportation sphere. The IRU mission: developing automotive transport and assisting in the improvement of the level of services rendered using motor vehicles.
A Memorandum on Cooperation between the Eurasian Economic Commission and the International Road Transport Union (IRU) was signed on December 11, 2012. Cooperation between the EEC and the IRU is aimed at developing international transportation by road in the Member States of the Eurasian Economic Union, elaborating joint recommendations on measures to regulate the international transportation by road, revealing and eliminating existing barriers, as well as implementing the transit potential of the EAEU Member States.
