Eurasian Economic Commission has agreed to cooperate with the European and Mediterranean Plant Protection Organization (EPPO)

On July 27 and 28, 2016 Moscow hosted an international seminar dedicated to the Program of European phytosanitary research coordination (Euphresco) between Member of the Board - Minister in charge of Technical Regulation of the EEC Valery Koreshkov and CEO of the European and Mediterranean Plant Protection Organization (EPPO), Martin Ward where the parties reached an agreement on the preparation of the program of cooperation between the EEC and EPPO.


The seminar was organized by the Eurasian Economic Commission and the European and Mediterranean Plant Protection Organization. The event was attended by representatives of the EEC, EPPO, national plant protection and quarantine organisations of the countries of the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU), Canada, Austria, Spain, the Netherlands, Latvia, Lithuania, Belgium and Spain, as well as scientific institutions of the States of the Union.
The seminar participants talked about achievements in the field of phytosanitary research conducted within the framework of the Euphresco Program. The scientific institutions of the States of the Union showed great interest in the Program and some of them may join it at EPPO’s invitation.
As an outcome of the seminar, an agreement was reached on the preparation of a program of cooperation between the EEC and EPPO until 2020. In September 2016, it should be submitted for consideration by the EPPO Council.
At the proposal of the representatives of the UN food and Agriculture Organization (UN FAO) and EPPO, it is planned to hold a joint seminar of the FAO/EEC/EPPO at the EEC in November. The seminar will concern the tracking of products subject to quarantine imported into the territory of the EAEU as well as the application of electronic phytosanitary certification in the Union.
Representatives of UN FAO also supported the proposal made by Valery Koreshkov on making additions to the Memorandum of Understanding between UN FAO and the EEC that was concluded in 2013. The proposed addition envisages that the Memorandum include cooperation measures in the field of the application of quarantine and phytosanitary measures and technical assistance to the EAEU countries in this sphere.
